John Alfred Pearson reckons this shows his grandad's family: Walker Dawson Benton (18), Sarah (16), Emily (11), Nellie (8), Sydney (6), Alfred (4), Florence (3) with mother Mary (34). Note that Mary is wearing 'widow's weeds'.
The picture could have been taken in October 1914 to commemorate the death of their father one year earlier.
WWI had started in July 1914; the soldier on the wall suggests that it was taken in a photographer's studio with a backdrop canvas typifying a nation gripped with patriotic fervour. It is just possible that the soldier is the one missing family member: George William, Mary's 16-year-old son who had just joined the army as a bugler.
