  • Notes
    • Margaret Jones
Gilbert worked on the railway at Workington and Tebay before being moved to work at Springs Branch in Wigan. He had been in lodgings from the age of 20, because of his work and in 1940 in conjunction with his move to Wigan he lodged in Marlborough Avenue, Spring View. Gertie (his wife to be) lived in Marlborough Avenue, with her parents and they met, for the first time, one night when she was going to the air raid shelter a few doors away and Gilbert was going to work. They evenutally married in 1942. He was a quiet man, generally known as a 'gentleman'. Was totally opposite to his wife, who he loved dearly and was probably the only person who could 'control' her (figuratively speaking that is). People living in Spring View knew him as 'Gertie Birchall's husband'. I doubt if many of them knew his surname but he was well known for being a listener and a good friend.
