    • Edmund Lamplough was found dead at Tangoio Beach, (or Petane) north of Napier on 13 July 1870, aged 25 years. Lamplough's horse, Phoebe found minus saddle further south in Petane Valley. Inquest held on 15 July 1870 at Napier.

Inquest found cause of death drowning however family history handed down believes that Edmund was ambushed and the mail was stolen. Death occurred during time of general unrest due to Te Kooti still being at large..

Lamplough's horse was returned to Waihua where, as recorded in "History of Old Wairoa" by Thomas Lambert, she reportedly committed suicide in the Waihua River by walking into the river and drowning. This horse was described by Lambert as being a fine blood chestnut mare that had previously been captured by Te Kooti during one of his earlier rampages and was later retrieved. In the inquest into Lamplough's death this horse is named as Phoebe.
