From the mid-eighteenth century, the East India Company began to maintain armies at each of its three main Stations (‘Presidencies’) - Calcutta (Bengal), Madras and Bombay.
The officers and their wives were almost inevitably from the English and Scottish upper classes. They lived the good life, surrounded by native servants and soldiers but were in a gilded cage far from home, so marriage within their social class had limited choice. This is well illustrated by this chart showing the inter-marriage of the Blacketts, Phillotts, Babingtons and Sutherlands.
