the bookbinding business of Magnus Anderson was eventually expanded into a general printing company by his son, James Urquhart Anderson, and, in 1854, led to the launch of The Orcadian newspaper – which will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. This is an early photograph of the premises of the company in Victoria Street, Kirkwall.

  • Notes
    • The circumstances that took Magnus junior to Orkney are not known. We do know, however, that he was married there, in July 1790, to a girl from Westray, by the name of Christian Seater. They had four children, two boys and two girls. Only the fourth child, a boy they named James Urquhart, seems to have survived infancy.
James was born in September, 1799. His mother sadly died shortly after his birth.
James Urquhart Anderson served as an elder in the Original Secession congregation until its linkage with the Free Church congregation, whereupon he became an elder in the Free Church and apparently acted as Precentor for a time.
He died in October 1874, in Kirkwall.
      ------------------------------------------
Marriage certificate of his daughter Margaret lists him as Printer and Publisher. Evelyn recalls that he owned newspaper, the 'Orcadian' which was first in Orkney isles.
      --------
The paper, founded by James Urquhart Anderson, remains a family-run enterprise, and the current editor and proprietor is James Miller, Anderson's great, great, great grandson. James Urquhart Anderson, writing in 1864, 10 years after he set up The Orcadian newspaper, said that many had laughed at his proposal of establishing a paper in the islands. "Yet we are getting stronger and stronger every week upon the pure air of Orkney," he wrote. The Orcadian was established by one James Urquhart Anderson in 1854 and is therefore about to celebrate its 150th birthday. But in a sense its history goes back further than that. James's father, Magnus, started the ball rolling by setting up a bookbinding business in Kirkwall in 1798. A very religious man, his mission was to bind and sell Bibles and collections of psalms. Some 20 years later James joined the business and added printing to their skills by way of a small Ruthven printing press.
