17 Recorder Street - the family home built by William with his own bricks.
'It looks a lot nicer than most of the houses he built' commented Helen Wood who adds 'My gt gt gt grandmother Elizabeth Barker (b 1795) lived here in 1871. The street was possibly built by her husband William Barker'.This image shows the large double fronted back-to-back house. Two small children stand on the front steps leading down to a private garden. The houses visible on the right are Stipendiary Terrace. B Hallam commented (2008) to Helen Wood: In 1861, your Gt-Gt-Gt Grandparents house was listed as being number 18. Your Gt.Gt.Gt.Grandad William Barker (aged 66), was a brickmaker. He and Elizabeth had a son George (aged 22) who was a carpenter. I suspect that the number difference was due to the original first house becoming a shop and it being renumbered as Beckett Street. I was very familiar with Recorder Street and the shop. see http://goo.gl/cFgx4
