    • (Research):Carlyle letters Liverpool, 3 Aug 1843
... Paulet and Geraldine were waiting patiently; Mrs Paulet was still far from any haste Our reception and welcome was of the most exquisite. Great disappointment because I could not stay all night. On the whole it is a curious establishment Paletdom, which I am not sorry to have seen;-where some time or other I could spend a day or two with satisfaction. The Lady seems to me a singular mixture of haveril [silly person] and sultana; a thoroughly innocent-hearted person,-very "detached," but handy enough to converse with. Paulet, I believe, to be a really good character too; but could almost guess, by the ways of him and by hints I got, that he must have spent his early life and fashioned his manner in the trade of Contrebandiste,-a fragment he of the Giant Smuggler too strong even for Napoleon

Carlyle letters Seaforth House, August, 1845.
Geraldine wrote to me that she would do as "she would be done by and let Mrs Paulet have me alone till Monday"-which was not less well judged than well meant. . late last night arrived Mrs Newton (Mrs Paulet's mother) and Julia Newton-on their way to Wales- they go tomorrow morning- Mrs Newton thro her marriage with a Methodist Minister has preserved her air of Lady of Rank all over. . . . I can say sincerely that Seaforth suits me to stay at better than any other place I know of in the present existing habitable globe.......Mr Paulet's christian name-since you will have it-is Etienne-genererally written E.-- But you had much better do as I bade you-address to the care of Mrs Paulet that my letters may not been taken to the counting House and kept there till "Etienne Paulet Esqr" comes home at night

Carlyle letters Seaforth House, Monday 6 July, 1846.
Seaforth looks beautifully calm and green, except when it thunders and lightens, which it almost continually does. Betsy has got a cough, and seems to be rather out of spirits, for her. Paulet has renewed his age, and has two clear eyes, and is, with the best intentions, always wearisome as heretofore. I shall do quite well here for a while, as I have the amplest tolerance granted me to be as ugly and stupid and disagreeable as ever I please,

      Carlyle Biog notes
