She was reputedly despatched to New York with her Uncle Charles in 1916, pregnant, to avoid family scandal. In the 1920 US Census she pops up in New York, living with Uncle Charles as husband and wife. Mystery: If the child Elizabeth was indeed born in 1918 it cannot be the child which Margaret was reportedly carrying when she went off to the US in 1916.

Notes handwritten on the reverse of these photos, if the ages are correct then the portraits were done in 1876, two years before their marriage. Mystery: the mounts carry the names of a Sydney photographer. Yet Charles never set foot in Australia. Amelia did, she and her new husband had a big shop at 38 Pitt Street which is close to the photographer ("corner Pitt and Market Sts, Syd").

  • Notes
    • Charles Constantine Hiscox appeared at Aylesbury General Sessions on 10 March 1875. Charge: Rape. The jury were unable to agree and were discharged. He remained in custody awaiting decision 'by due course of Law'. On 12 July 1875 he was acquitted and discharged. Charles married Amelia in 1876 and they had two girls. He was divorced on wife's petition in 1886 and went to America.
Charles returned to the UK in 1915 and stayed for three months with Rev John Hoult Brooksbank and wife Frances (Charles' sister) at the vicarage in Hathersage. It would seem that the 59-year-old took a fancy to his sister's 21-year-old daughter Margaret. Margaret becomes pregnant. The next thing we know is that three months after his arrival Charles is on his way back to New York with Margaret. The 1920 US Census show him in New York (naturalized 1917), married to Margaret, with a daughter Elizabeth born in 1918 in New York. He lists himself as "retired British Army officer". [8]
