Amelia Melinda Hiscox aged 16 years, wife of Charles Constantine Hiscox, mother of Violetta Harriette, Ethel Marianne, Sybil Gladys deceased, Inez Daphne deceased, Maude Edith deceased, Frederick Charles deceased.
Notes handwritten on the reverse of these photos, if the ages are correct then the portraits were done in 1876, two years before their marriage. Mystery: the mounts carry the names of a Sydney photographer. Yet Charles never set foot in Australia. Amelia did, she and her new husband had a big shop at 38 Pitt Street which is close to the photographer ("corner Pitt and Market Sts, Syd").

    newspaper clipping c1915:
"In this issue is given a portrait of Mrs Vernon Howard, wife of Mr V. W. Howard JP, of Woollahra, a lady well known in connection with charitable work in and about Sydney. Mrs Howard is a native of Devonshire, and was educated in France, and returning to her native country she developed a passion for equestrienneship, following the hounds and winning many brushes. Married in England [sic], Mrs Howard, seventeen years ago, accompanied her husband to Australia. In private life the lady is a popular and earnest worker in charitable movements, and being a good singer, assists frequently at concerts for the blind. &c. Mrs Howard is greatly esteemed for her generous unpretentious manner, and her genuineness in all her charitable labours."

very faded photo of Amelia taken at their home in Waverley. She is sitting at a table with a lace cloth on it, having a cup of tea. On the table is a china teapot, china milk jug and china biscuit barrel. Very much the lady, but the rickety old fence tells a different story.

back of photo reads "Dear Ethel, these are snap shots taken by "Inez" of me, the sun was in my eyes & I could not open them. Otherwise the photo is very good I think. She will try some others later. "Pussie" Ellis, Mrs Beaton went to Melbourne from South Australia yesterday with husband and children. With love to all from mother"

Anna Marie Rey (nee Ward) (b. 1837) and her sister Amelia Melinda Howard (nee Ward) (1859) went to school in Bd Hauffmann, Paris, but Anna stayed on at the school. Anna became governess or teacher to the son of Napoleon III, the Prince Imperial. The story is that Napoleon III was very unpopular on account of losing the 1870 Prussian war and fled to England and died in 1873. His wife Eugenie, fled later, via the sewers of Paris. She was helped by Anna Maria Rey (nee Ward). It is possible to drive a small coach along the sewers. Empress Eugenie is an interesting person and was friendly with Queen Victoria. She lived at Camden House in Chislehurst with the Prince Imperial. Camden House is now a wealthy golf house. The Prince Imperial was fond of his one-time governess and used to visit her in London, possibly Chelsea, before he was killed in the Boer War. Eugenie died in 1921 at the age of about 92 and had learned to fly a plane. The house of Amelia Howard (nee Ward) at Glebe in Sydney, was called Chislehurst, presumably after the area where Empress Eugenie lived. -----
Amelia married Charles Constantine Hiscox in 1876. They had two girls (in 1876 and 1878) but by 1881 she was back home with her mother and sister. Her divorce was finalised in 1886.

      ---
Note on Inez death certificate Amelia is shown as Millicent Howard of 164 Oxford St, Woollahra. Her name was Amelia Melinda but she often called herself Millicent.
