Charles Frederick Hall joined the Indian Civil Service. He married Caroline Ely (born in Rochester in 1851) in Hackney in the July 1871. The 1871 Census in May 1871 shows Caroline at the residence of Benjamin Puckle, rector of Graffham, apparently teaching one of his India-born nieces. Millicent Puckle age 11. The assumption is that Charles Frederick met Caroline on a trip to England in 1871, married her almost immediately, and carried her back to India with the approval of her father because she was still a minor. Their two boys were born in India in 1873 and 1875. Theywere staying with his brother Edward in 1871.

India must have been good for Frederick because at the time of the 1891 Census he was already retired (age 54, which seems extremely early) from the Indian Civil Service. He died on 13 June 1902 at the age of 63.
